Always one step ahead: Nect files another patent for highly secure identification

  • Patent application for the security module “Put Your Face Here” (PYFH) published
  • PYFH serves a high level of security in line with the eIDAS Regulation
  • Benny Bennet Jürgens: “Put Your Face Here” massively complicates manipulation of video material and underpins our claim to be a highly secure technology leader.
Hamburg, 01/02/2023 The Hamburg-based IT company Nect repeatedly creates surprisingly simple solutions with its trust services that make security user-friendly. Using the latest scientific findings, an in-house security team and collaborations with universities, Nect continuously improves its own security modules and develops new technologies. A new patent application for the security module “Put Your Face Here” (PYFH) has now been published by the European Patent Office under the number EP4113334A1.
In practical terms, this means: Users are shown a frame on the screen of their mobile device in which they must place the photo of their ID card. The frame is then moved to another, randomly selected position on the screen. The person to be identified must again place their photo there. This process is repeated several times, and users are interactively guided to the next placement each time. Because the frame positions are unknown in advance and newly generated for each identification process, “Put Your Face Here” can determine that the recording of the ID document was created right now, in this very moment. This effectively prevents the reuse of stolen recordings as well as manipulation in advance—an essential component for achieving security equivalent to an on-site check of an ID document.
Benny Bennet Jürgens, CEO and founder of Nect GmbH: “The use of previously recorded and possibly edited video material is made massively more difficult, if not completely impossible, thanks to the integration of the “Put Your Face Here” module. With our third patent application, we are once again underpinning our claim and our determination to become the leading technology provider for digital identities in Germany. With our highly innovative security technologies, we combine the latest scientific findings with first-class developer know-how. This enables us to create applications that can be used securely in a wide range of highly regulated sectors, such as insurance companies and telecommunications providers, thanks to our unique security modules .”
“Put Your Face Here” is a security module that Nect initially developed to create qualified electronic signatures (QES). The module is certified under Article 24(1)(d) of the eIDAS Regulation and can replace the written form requirement through the identity check carried out in the process. In addition, PYFH can be integrated as an additional security factor into the company’s identification solution, Nect Ident, to achieve an even higher level of security.
Nect Ident is Nect’s core identification technology. In addition to an optical check, the online ID function (eID), the electronic passport (ePass) and Nect Sign can also be used via the company’s app, the Nect Wallet. Here, users can store their ID document digitally and securely after the first process and reuse it within seconds for further services within the Nect partner network. With more than 6.5 million users, the Nect Wallet offers a widely used solution for managing your digital ID document as well as for electronic signatures.
The processes already developed by Nect include basic security checks that can detect digital manipulation, from text changes to deep fakes. In addition to a document check, including authenticity and validity, these also include facial matching as well as real-time and liveness checks. The additional module “Put Your Face Here” further increases the security level of identification with Nect Ident.

About Nect

Nect GmbH was founded in 2017 by Benny Bennet Jürgens and Carlo Ulbrich and is one of the leading providers of digital, AI-based identification solutions in Germany. All solutions are provided via the company’s own app, the Nect Wallet. In addition to Nect Ident, which includes identification via automated video ident, eID, ePass and a reuse function, the company offers Nect Sign, a solution for qualified electronic signatures (QES). The technology developed and patented by Nect is used by, among others, R+V Versicherung, ADAC, BARMER and Telekom Deutschland. Data security and data protection are at the heart of Nect’s solutions. This is ensured both by the complete in-house development of the software components and by using data centers in Germany with an exceptionally high security level and by not using cloud solutions.
