Nect receives gematik approval for using Nect Ident with ePass to create the HealthID

  • The biometric process offers insured persons a secure alternative to the eID with PIN and enables access to the ePA, e-prescription and TI Messenger.
  • Identification is carried out via the Nect Wallet, Europe’s largest private wallet provider, 100% Made in Germany.
  • Combination of eID and ePass enables millions of people to access the telematics infrastructure securely and easily

The gematik has approved the process Nect Ident with ePass for use within the scope of the GesundheitsID. In future, insured persons will be able to use it to identify themselves not only via the standard German eID with PIN, but also via a biometric process, thereby gaining access to digital health applications such as the electronic patient record (ePA), the e-prescription or the TI Messenger. Approval for digital identity verification to activate and issue a PIN for the electronic health card, as well as for use of the health insurers’ online service portals (OGS), was already granted in August 2025.

Biometric identification as an alternative to the eID

With the Nect Ident ePass process, identity is verified biometrically, offering an alternative to the standard eID for the first time. It supports identification for creating the GesundheitsID and enables access to the ePA, e-prescription and TI Messenger. Identification is carried out exclusively via the Nect Wallet, which protects against attacks and is used by millions. After successful verification, health insurers can directly enable insured persons for the ePA, e-prescription and other TI applications. The process is simple for users: capture the ID document, check NFC, record a selfie video for biometric verification.

Philipp Kölmel, CTO, and Dr Julian Schweizer, VP Technology at Nect: “Since 2017, we have been developing processes that enable health insurers to offer their insured persons a secure, user-centric identification process. Since then, we have been in close dialogue with gematik and have continuously improved our workflows and processes in order to remain the market leader in remote identification for health insurers. Approval by gematik shows that these processes can be used in practice, allowing us to jointly drive forward digital healthcare in Germany”

The GesundheitsID as a central element of digitalisation in healthcare

The GesundheitsID forms the identity basis for applications and facilitates access to sensitive health services. Nevertheless, part of the population is excluded from processes such as the eID—for example, because they do not have a PIN or because they do not possess a German ID document.

Benny Bennet Jürgens, CEO and Founder of Nect: “With the combination of Nect Ident for eID and ePass, we can enable secure and easy access to the telematics infrastructure for almost everyone in Germany. With the Nect Wallet, we not only show users that security can also be user-friendly, but also build the bridge into the era of the EUDI Wallet.”

For health insurers, this opens up new opportunities: they reach more insured persons, increase the use of digital services and, at the same time, create a high level of trust in future developments.
