Milestone in online identification: Nect Robo-Ident technology receives certification as a trust service module (eIDAS)

  • Nect Robo-Ident is listed with the Federal Network Agency as the first video identification solution with automated procedures to demonstrate compliance with the specific requirements of eIDAS, the VDG and the VDV.
  • Confirmations relating to alternative identification methods within the meaning of Article 24 eIDAS provide evidence in particular of the determination of equivalent security in terms of reliability compared to in-person presence.
  • Nect CEO Jürgens: “An important step for the future of online identification
in general and a milestone for our EU-wide expansion”

Hamburg, 29/06/2021 Nect’s Robo-Ident technology has been added to the list of service components for identifying a natural person at the Federal Network Agency as the first—and currently only—module for video identification with automated procedures. In agreement with the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the Federal Network Agency is responsible for defining the identification methods nationally recognized within the meaning of Article 24(1), second subparagraph, letter d) of the eIDAS Regulation of the European eIDAS Regulation (electronic IDentification, Authentication and Trust Services) and the respective applicable minimum requirements. Compliance with the applicable requirements of eIDAS, the VDG and the VDV, including the supplementary assessment criteria for automated video identification, was certified for the Nect Robo-Ident module by the accredited conformity assessment body datenschutz cert GmbH.

The confirmations of the Robo-Ident technology within the meaning of Article 24(1) letter d) of eIDAS provide evidence in particular of the determination of equivalent security in terms of reliability compared to in-person presence.
Benny Bennet Jürgens, founder and CEO of Nect: “The first-time certification of automated video identification, taking into account eIDAS and the supplementary criteria of the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) and the BSI by datenschutz cert GmbH, is an important breakthrough for the future of online identification. This rewards our pioneering work and our strategy, and positions us as a leader in AI-based optical remote identification of people in Europe. In addition, we have reached an important milestone for our EU-wide expansion.”

Field-tested security and robustness

With the Nect solution based on artificial intelligence (AI), companies can offer their customers secure yet simple access to their services. The use of the patent-pending technology enables users to identify themselves remotely with ease—24 hours a day and, in principle, with ID documents from almost every country in the world.
Many companies in regulated industries, such as insurers, health insurance funds and telecommunications providers, already use Nect Robo-Ident technology for fast, simple and secure identification of their customers.
Since April 2021, users identified in this way have also been able to manage and reuse their identity in the Nect Wallet. In total, around 4 million existing users in Germany now have the option of identifying themselves online with the Nect app in just a few seconds. Based on its ranking in the Play Store and App Store, the Nect app has been among the top 100 apps in Germany for months.
Benny Bennet Jürgens: “In the first half of this year alone, we have already carried out 1.8 million identifications; in 2020, it was more than two million. Extensive random sampling by specialists and machine robustness tests of the artificial intelligence do not show a single case of fraud that went undetected by our technology. This proves the reliability of our technology.”
Carlo Ulbrich, CSO and co-founder, adds: “With this foundation, we want to enable a new generation of qualified electronic signatures (QES) in the coming months and address banks in Europe
Nect’s technology was first used in 2018 at R+V Versicherung. Since then, numerous other well-known insurance companies have joined the customer base, such as HUK-Coburg, Barmer and WGV Versicherung. In addition, organizations, companies and institutions from other sectors have also opted for the powerful and secure solution, such as Deutsche Telekom, the Federal Employment Agency and Hamburgische Investitions- und Förderbank.
